Top Qualities to Look for in a Spouse: An Islamic Perspective

When a family starts looking for a rishta, the first questions are usually about city, profession, family background, and appearance. These things matter. But Islam is very clear about what should matter most — and it is none of those.

What Islam Says to Prioritise

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us a clear answer:

"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty, and her religion. So try to get the one who is religious, may your hand be rubbed with dust."

— Sahih al-Bukhari (5090), Sahih Muslim (1466)

This hadith is not saying wealth, beauty, or family background do not matter. It is saying that deen and character should come first. Everything else is secondary.

Wealth changes. Beauty fades. Family status can shift overnight. But a person with strong deen and good character tends to stay that way through the difficulties of marriage, raising children, and the ordinary challenges of life.

Character Is Measured at Home

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

"The most complete of the believers in faith is the one with the best character. And the best of you are those who are best to their women."

— Jami at-Tirmidhi (1162)

Notice what is being measured here — not how someone behaves at work, with friends, or in public. But how they behave at home, when no one else is watching. That is the truest test of character.

When evaluating a rishta, it is worth asking people who have seen this person at home — not just friends or colleagues who see their best side.

What the Quran Says About Marriage

Allah describes a good marriage in two key verses:

"And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them — perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good."

— Surah An-Nisa (4:19)

Kindness in marriage is not a feeling — it is an obligation. This verse tells us that even in difficult moments, a spouse with good character will treat their partner with respect.

"And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy."

— Surah Ar-Rum (30:21)

This verse does not promise a perfect marriage. It promises a person you can find peace with. When evaluating a rishta, the real question is not "does this person impress me?" — it is "can I be myself around this person?"

Top Qualities to Look For

Based on the Quran and Hadith, here are the qualities that matter most:

  • Deen and practice — Do they pray regularly? Are they honest even when it costs them something?
  • Good character at home — How do they treat their parents, siblings, and household staff?
  • Emotional maturity — Are they patient, calm under pressure, and able to handle disagreement with respect?
  • Honesty and transparency — Do they say what they mean and mean what they say?
  • Family values — Do they respect the role of family in decisions and relationships?
  • Compatibility in lifestyle — Do your daily habits, values, and goals align?

Common Questions Families Ask

QShould we only look for someone religious and ignore everything else?+

No. The Prophet ﷺ acknowledged that wealth, beauty, and family background are real reasons families consider a proposal. Islam simply says deen and character should come first — not that other things do not matter at all. A good balance is to shortlist based on practical factors and then prioritise character and deen in the final decision.

QWhat if the person seems very religious but has a bad temper?+

This is a red flag. True deen shows in how a person treats others, especially at home. The Prophet ﷺ directly connected faith with good character. A short temper, disrespect toward family members, or controlling behaviour are serious concerns regardless of how religious someone appears.

QHow do we find out about someone's real character before marriage?+

Speak to people who know them at home — not just friends. Ask about how they treat their parents and younger siblings. Observe how they behave under pressure or when things don't go their way. A few honest conversations with the right people will tell you more than months of formal meetings.

The Right Foundation Lasts

A rishta built on deen and character tends to be the one that lasts. Allah placed love and mercy between spouses by design — but that foundation needs the right person to grow on.
