Istikhara for Marriage — A Step by Step Guide

Istikhara is one of the most beautiful gifts Allah has given us. When we face an important decision — especially one as big as marriage — Islam gives us a way to ask Allah directly for guidance.
This guide explains what Istikhara is, how to perform it correctly, and what to expect after.
What is Istikhara?
The word Istikhara comes from the Arabic root khayr, meaning goodness. Literally it means "to seek the good." When you perform Istikhara, you are asking Allah to guide you toward what is good for you and to keep you away from what is harmful — even if you cannot see it yourself.
It is not fortune telling. It is not a dream interpreter. It is an act of worship and complete trust in Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"If any one of you is concerned about a decision he has to make, let him pray two rak'ahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say this supplication."
— Sahih al-Bukhari (1166)
This hadith shows that Istikhara is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ — not just a cultural tradition. It was taught directly by him as a practical tool for making decisions in life.
When Should You Perform Istikhara for Marriage?
Istikhara is recommended when:
- A rishta proposal has come and you are seriously considering it
- You have done your research — met the family, checked their background, and feel the person is suitable
- You are leaning toward saying yes but want Allah's guidance to confirm
Important: Istikhara is not meant to replace research and consultation. First do your due diligence. Then seek Allah's guidance.
Do not perform Istikhara for a decision that is clearly wrong or sinful. Istikhara is for matters that are permissible and where both options are reasonable.
How to Perform Istikhara — Step by Step
Step 1 — Make fresh wudu
Ensure you are in a state of purity before beginning. Perform wudu as you would for any salah.
Step 2 — Pray two rak'ahs of nafl (voluntary) prayer
Pray two rak'ahs with the intention of Istikhara. These are separate from your obligatory prayers. You may recite any surah after Surah Al-Fatiha.
Many scholars recommend reciting Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second, though this is not obligatory.
Step 3 — After the salah, recite the Istikhara dua
After completing the two rak'ahs, raise your hands and recite the dua of Istikhara with full focus and sincerity:
— Sahih al-Bukhari (1166)
Translation: "O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek Your help by Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. You have power and I have none. You know and I do not know. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allah, if in Your knowledge this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my life, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, then bless me in it. And if in Your knowledge this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and my life, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it. And ordain for me the good wherever it may be, then make me pleased with it."
When you reach the words "hadhal-amra" (this matter), bring the specific matter — the rishta — to mind.
Step 4 — Trust Allah and move forward
After performing Istikhara, continue with your normal life. Do not wait passively for a sign. Consult your family, continue your conversations, and make a decision based on what feels right in your heart.
What to Expect After Istikhara
This is where many people get confused. Here is what scholars actually say:
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting for a dream as a requirement — it is not obligatory
- Performing Istikhara before doing any research — Istikhara comes after proper consideration, not instead of it
- Repeating it obsessively — this can be a sign of waswasa (whispers of Shaytan). Trust Allah after performing it sincerely
- Ignoring the feelings in your heart — your heart after Istikhara is the tool Allah uses to guide you
Conclusion
Istikhara is one of the most powerful acts of worship a Muslim can perform. It is a direct conversation with Allah about a decision that will shape your entire life. Perform it with sincerity, trust His answer, and move forward with confidence knowing that you have placed your affairs in the best of hands.
